Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds is a massively multiplayer online (MMO) survival game that was released to Steam on 23 March 2017. The MMO survival game was developed and published by Bluehole Inc. after being proposed by lead designer Brendan Greene.
Greene’s online alias, Playerunknown, first came to the attention of MMO survival gamers when he created a battle royale mod for Arma 2. The success of battle royale then led to the mod being introduced into other MMO survival games like ARK: Survival Evolved, DayZ, H1Z1, and Rust.
Battle royale’s widespread success and popularity inspired Greene to develop his own standalone version. In Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, up to 100 players will be dropped onto an island covering 8km by 8km. The competitive design of the game will challenge players to be the last person or team standing.
Players start the game sitting in a plane and viewing their fellow competitors/teammates with a third-person perspective. That perspective then carries through to the main game and the player being dropped from the plane and rapidly hurtling towards the island below.
There is a tense feeling of trying to find the optimal moment to hit the R key and open the parachute. Too early and players will be left vulnerable to marksmen, while too late could result in a catastrophic collision with the earth below.
Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds then enters the familiar territory of its contemporary rivals by leaving the player to explore urban or rural surroundings for weapons, ammunition, and supplies. Of course, this all happens while trying to avoid gunshots and explosions from the players who have already found weapons.
Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds doesn’t break the mould of MMO survival games, but that doesn’t hold it back from impressing in terms of gameplay, having been designed on Unreal Engine 4 by the godfather of the third-person battle royale.
