In 2015, NetherRealm Studios developed the tenth installment of this franchise that was released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and it was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows video gaming consoles and platforms. The game was also released for iOS and Android devices. Additionally, the game was being developed also for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 but it had to be cancelled because the developing team could not achieve the quality of the game that has become one of the trademarks of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Just like any other game from this franchise, the Mortal Kombat X is the game where two players fight each other or one player fights against the AI of the game.
The story of this installment is placed some 22 years in the future after the events of the last Mortal Kombat game. The main villain in this game is once again the banished god called Shinnok. This and many other aspects of the game make this game a bit predictable and force us to think that we have already seen these things before. This game is not without its problems and some of them might even be very hard to overcome for some players. One such issue is the introduction of the new characters. Nobody expected the game not to include new characters but what everyone expected is that it would be done in a much better and more original way. New characters that were introduced in this version of the game are mostly kids or relatives of the characters that have already appeared at some point in the Mortal Kombat franchise. However, the total disaster with new characters was avoided by giving those characters some of the most interesting skills and abilities that will be useful at some point of the game.
For each character there are three sets of attacks that the player can choose in the fights against other players. Each of these three attacks set is adjusted to some type of combat such as close contact combat, distance attacks and others. This version of the games introduces a huge number of modes that player can choose from. With such a big selection of modes, each player will be able to find a mode that suits him or her the best and it does not matter whether you are a fan of most difficult single-player mode or you are a fan of multiplayer mode you will find something that will be interesting to you. Another advantage of this installment of the game in comparison to previous versions is that the online mode works perfectly in this version and you are connected to other player very quickly. Fraction is also one of the bright spots of this game and in this game will fight as a member of certain fraction and by winning you will contribute to the positioning of that fraction against other fractions.
Fatalities, one of the biggest trademarks of the Mortal Kombat franchise, are also included in the game and, honestly, the game would be totally different if these features were not included in the game. Finishing battles with ripping the opponent's body parts and shoving them into some other parts of their bodies is what make this game unique in a world of similar fighting games. However, one of the features that were popular in previous installments, Tag-Team battles, is missing in the tenth installment. Some fans of this franchise might have some issues with this fact but this game offers so many other amazing features that will make easier to overcome the fact that Tag-Team battle are not included in this game. One slightly problematic issue with the fatality feature in this game is that sometimes it requires small money transactions in order to obtain Easy Fatalities tokens that you can use in very easy way by only pressing two buttons on the controller.
Taking everything into consideration, Mortal Kombat X has been a truly excellent sequel to the previous game in this franchise. The main reason for that is the fact that the main gameplay of the game is still very interesting and that it provides a very enjoyable experience for the players. Story mode, on the other hand, is slightly shorter than in the previous installments but it is much more interesting because it focuses on important features without spending a lot of time on irrelevant things.
New characters, new features and new modes made the tenth installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise a worthy heir of the previous Mortal Kombat game. This game introduced some of the best solutions that we have seen in this franchise so far and it will most definitely be the basis on which new installments will be developed. The Mortal Kombat brings back some of the elements from the early stages of game development and brings back many good memories that we had while playing this game as kids.
