Mario Kart 8 is a kart racing game developed by Nintendo EAD helped by Namco Bandai Games for Wii U, which became the fastest selling Wii U game with 1.2 million copies sold in initial four days of its release, and 2.82 million copies in its first month.
It is awarded by BAFTA, Eurogamer, GameSpot's Game of the Year 2014, The Guardian, Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Interactive Achievement Awards and The Game Awards.
As the name itself suggests it is the eighth instalment in the main Mario Kart series and the eleventh in general.
In May 2014 the game was released worldwide. It can be bought in physical game stores or in Nintendo eShop. The game itself builds upon previous Mario Kart storyline, where characters from Mario franchise race against each other in go-karts, trying to improve their skills by using tools found in item boxes or by trying to sabotage their opponents.
This, as well as some other games in Mario Kart series includes motorbikes and other racing vehicles, like gliders.
The new improvement on the previous versions is anti-gravity, which offers a possibility to drive on almost any surface. There are also already seen elements from Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7.
There are several Mario Kart 8 game modes, which are all available for one player, and some of them also support local and online multiplayer option. These modes are Grand Prix, Time Trials, VS Race, Battle, Online and Mario Kart TV. There are also three classes which depend on the size of the vehicle characters drive: light, medium, and heavy. Mario Kart 8 includes total of 36 characters, with 16 of them being default characters, 14 characters to unlock, and 6 characters available through the purchase of the add-on packs.
