Guardians is the fifth installment of the first-person shooter Halo series, developed by 343 Industries and published by Microsoft exclusively for the Xbox One. Halo is well-known as one of the Xbox best-sellers widely acclaimed as Xbox lead title. Halo 5: Guardians was released in October 2015, with the story following characters of Spartan Locke and Fireteam Osiris and Master Chief and his Blue Team.
Halo, as a series, is well-known for the enjoyable gameplay and the Guardians seems to perfectly follow the legacy here. As a natural development based on Halo 4, developers have done a great job improving the campaign, as well as introducing and enhancing the multiplayer modes.
In the single-player, the AI-controlled team is a lot more responsive and controllable by the player with more detailed commands and actual work done by the teammates. Their roles are a lot more intuitive and they usually know where they need to be and quickly respond to the to-dos. Targeting commands is rather easy and can be just the edge you need to complete the objectives.
Halo 5 is also physically improved, where the movements are more believable and the player can now change the direction of quick-dash and jump trajectory with hover jets by simply aiming down the sight.
Climbing is also made easy and increases the mobility and speed you can make, where the jump-duck clambering has been substituted with clean and impeccable climb when you’re close to a ledge.
The new Halo 5: Guardians is all about the game modes which make the game as great as the rest of the series. The new multiplayer headline is Warzone, which was one of the boldest moves we were used from 343 Industries. Warzone is a strategic approach to the first-person shooter where you play against the other team and collect points by winning over locations and killing AI-controlled bosses in the process. The mode will definitely give you the thrills and build competitiveness to another level, with two objectives you can choose from - destroy the enemy base or collect 1,000 points.
Warzone brings excitement in strategy, with huge maps and awesome shootouts in such big numbers of players. The maps are cleverly designed to enable both all-out firefights in close-quarters combat and lone-wolfing in hiding spots. The matches are also somewhat longer than before, with no dominant strategy and with emphasized importance of resources available as well as using specific skills to beat the opponents in all possible well-balanced scenarios.
Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer Focus
Best thing is Warzone is just the start to a detail-oriented multiplayer where the game seems a perfect fit for a four-player co-op where you can finally use perfect communication with your friends to beat the bosses and bring ultimate destruction to your screens. As said the levels are rewarding and innovative, with more strategies to employ and different weapons to pick up, which further reinstates the importance of the team-play.
Arena is a 4v4 multiplayer which brings the classic game with great maps and enhanced gameplay. The mode will have you and your teammates learning how to break opponents and fight different strategies as well as making your individual skill count. There are also modes such as CTF, Slayer, CTF, and SWAT where it’s easy to find your favorite and get into it.
Graphics and Story
Halo has become well-known for the frame rate it offers and the 60 fps have become classic and we all seem to expect it more or less. That has come at a price where 343 Industries had to adjust the resolution in order to deliver it. However, we were very happy to see that the developers decided to go for dynamic resolution scaling rather than lowering it throughout the game. This proved to be highly efficient and although there are some texture issues the game is looking more than sharp for the most part. The impressive resolution scaling is topped by the great lighting effects, reflections and the overall geometry throughout the game. This made the game look outstanding while providing the 60 fps in both single and multiplayer modes. Model and water effects look very realistic as well as the rocks and most of the surfaces throughout.
We were very happy to see the improvements in the gameplay and graphics, while also maintaining the great FPS we were used to, and it was obvious Halo 5: Guardians is to be one of the top titles of the year. However, we do feel the story fails and the game actually suffers from it where certain aspects simply feel below the standard and it’s very easy losing the grip and getting confused by it.
The story will have you switching spots and points of view between Locke and Master Chief, where Master Chief’s integrity is challenged and the beloved character is actually compromised with emotional conflicts for the players. The story sometimes simply doesn’t feel enough for the title Halo 5: Guardians is, but the campaign is nevertheless satisfying to play.
With improved gameplay and mechanics, as well as new game modes, Halo seems just to top the long-standing first-person shooter series. Guardians has seen remodeled and updated weapons, characters, and movement while not losing out on the frame rate and the fun the fans loved for almost fifteen years now.
The only objection we’ve had was the failure to actually provide a more meaningful story, whether it’s connecting certain aspects more obviously with no leaps or simply introducing the Blue Team background. However, the campaign was still very fun and competitive and provided a perfect kick-start to the great multiplayer modes in the offer.
The four-player co-op is also very enjoyable and modes such as Arena perfectly satisfy the veterans while Warzone refreshes the game and brings it the much needed modern look to appeal to newcomers as well. The well-balanced maps and the cosmetics keep the game modes competitive and allow the players to customize the characters and enrich the gameplay at the same time.
