Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 hit the stores in 2012 with a fresh gameplay, improved graphics and a branching storyline, with multiple endings.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is the second installment in the series of games developed by Treyarch. As a part of the larger franchise published by Activision, it was released on November 13, 2012 and can be played on PCs, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The game continues the story of its prequel, and has a branching storyline, with nonlinear gameplay and multiple endings. It takes players back and forth in time and even has a standalone narrative featuring zombies, in its expansion pack.

Nonlinear Gameplay Makes Call of Duty Black Ops 2 Great

Despite the success of the prequel, developers decided not to dwell on the same gameplay. The branching storylines of Strike Force missions begin in 2025 and players gain access to a high-tech arsenal. All decisions matter and when players sign up for a mission, they lock themselves out from other assignments. In order to unlock all content, players need to start a new campaign, which in turn insures the replayability of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Some players complained about the fact that the previous game in the series was too easy and developers made the necessary amendments. If players die during the campaign mode, the special missions are marked as lost and there’s no possibility to start again from checkpoints. The impact of every action is highlighted by the alternative endings, making the narrative more exciting.

Intertwined Stories and a Complex Plot

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 storyline takes players across the globe, to South America, Angola, South Africa and Afghanistan. The narrative revolves around fictional characters, such as Raul Menendez and David Mason, with some events being narrated by Frank Woods. However, the game frequently brings in the spotlight real-life characters, such as the Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. To some extent, the first-person shooter also has an educational value by describing some of the real events of the Cold War.

Its compelling story gets players fully immersed into the gameplay and is littered with accurate historical facts. At the same time, it brilliantly succeeds at making a smooth transition from the future to the past. Players get to use diverse weaponry, ranging from real guns to fictional weapons from the future. After finishing the campaign, players can hone their skills in Strike Missions and ultimately in multiplayer.

    Summary

With Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, developers didn’t hesitate to walk down the less traveled paths. They introduced new concepts, revamped the gameplay and created a complex narrative. The story driven campaign has the merit of teaching players a thing or two about history, while they have a great time playing. This is also the installment in the franchise that firmly established Call of Duty as one of the most important games in the eSports arena.
